I love to fly, but my favorite part is the anticipation of who will be sitting next to me on the flight. Now I adore my books and always have one handy to read (currently, Never After by Laurell K. Hamilton, Marjorie M. Liu, Yasmine Galenorn and Sharon Shinn), but I lucked out by being seated next to Maia P...Read More

![]() I'm a grown woman, but the words "Friday the 13th" still have the power to creep me out. I'm sure the movies didn't help, even though I never saw them. I guess I am a superstition person and I'm always glad to see Saturday the 14th come around. I'm leaving today for Boston and the Crime Bake Conference. Since I've never been to Boston, I'm looking forward to it. Although, as most of you convention goers know, you usually don't get very far from the hotel. There's always so much going on. This week I read Street Game by ...Read More

![]() Today we'll be covering the last of the Christmas books and next week it will be back to the non-Christmas ones. So, here's your chance to check out what you'd like to finish the year off with and maybe a couple for those St. Nick stockings. Maureen likes structure and order in her life. It's probably why she is such a good librarian for the Avalon library. Now she is working on the annual holiday pageant for the town. Her co-director is former child star E ...Read More

Hurry up! Time is running out! Wednesday is the last day to vote on BHB's Best Books of 2009. (You can still vote here) Last Friday I invited all you readers to let me know your favorite books of 2009. The idea was for everyone to have their say and make a list by the readers for the readers. I appreciate all the feedback I've received and feel I need to clarify a few things. Please only vote once, but you can vote for up to 3 books. If you list more than 3, only the first 3 count. You're all on the honor system. The books must have a publishing date of 2009. Now I realize there a...Read More

![]() I'm packing for my first trip to Boston Friday to attend Crime Bake. Until then, here's the news I heard for this week. From Harlequin: Harlequin has just announced an all digital publishing house, Carina Press. It will be independent of their traditional publishing businesses. According to Harlequin: ![]() ...Read More

![]() Today is National Book Store Day. From PW: More than 100 bookstores across the country are planning to participate in the PW-sponsored event National Bookstore Day this Saturday, November 7. Event organizers are hoping promotions tied to the day will attract local and national media coverage—and, in turn, draw new customers into bookstores. “The number of stores already signed up meets our rosiest hopes for this first year. Many of the stores celebrating National Bookstore Day are recognized nationally as leaders, so we're gratified that this idea has been endorsed by these savvy booksellers,” said Ron Shank, PW group publisher. Among the offerings that bookstores are planning a...Read More

![]() November 1st was the big day. NaNoWriMo officially started. For those not in the know, "National Novel Writing Month is a fun, seat-of-your-pants approach to novel writing. Participants begin writing November 1. The goal is to write a 175-page (50,000-word) novel by midnight, November 30. Valuing enthusiasm and perseverance over painstaking craft, NaNoWriMo is a novel-writing program for everyone who has thought fleetingly about writing a novel but has been scared away by the time and effort involved. Because of the limited writing window, the ONLY thing that matters in NaNoWriMo is output. It's all about quantity, not quality. The kamikaze approach forces you to lo...Read More
