When Authors Visit

October 29, 2009 happy thursday Pictures, Images and Photos

I'm not sure authors always realize the impact they have on readers.  Just sharing a few minutes of their time can mean the world to someone who has read your book.  Beyond Her Book blurbers Joysann and Heidi caught up with a couple of authors recently and are sharing their experiences with us today.

Cooking Up Dead by Joysann

What do authors Connie Laux, Zoe Daniels, Connie Deka, Constance Laux, Miranda Bliss, and Connie Lane have in common?  They are all Casey Daniels, author of the increasingly popular Pepper Martin Mystery series.

The Medina County District Library I work for hosts the Writers Live banquet a couple times a year, and this time, Thursday, Oct 22, they invited Casey to come to tell how her series came about. Since she is a local (Northeast Ohio) and her heroine, a private eye for the dead, works in cemetery based on Cleveland's most famous (Lake View), she had lots of stories to tell to which her audience could relate.

But that's just this one character. In her multiple personalities Casey has written a wide range of books from historical and contemporary romance to a Goosebumps. Her other upcoming release is part of the Cooking Class Mystery series she writes as Miranda Bliss.

Author Laura Caldwell visits Book Club by Heidi
Laura Caldwell and Heidi

I had the honor of meeting Laura Caldwell in October at my book club. Laura is a Chicago-based lawyer turned novelist. Thanks to Facebook and Barbara's Blog; I was brave enough to contact Laura about her new Izzy McNeil series. After a series of emails, we had a date set for her to make an appearance at our book club.

What a treat it was to hear from Laura about her start as a writer! She did not start in a typical style. She journaled most of her life, but wasn't a writer at a young age. She even mentioned she failed creative writing and received low grades in legal writing while becoming a lawyer. But Laura believes you can adapt and become GREAT in anything you set your mind to!!

She also mentioned that it's the little tiny things that add up to a big result. So her first idea for a novel came to her as a simple "what if" question. That first novel she pushed for 8 years and THEN she sold that first book. What is amazing is that she sold 7 novels in 18 months once her first book was sold. That is one determined woman!

Laura has also been told she is naively cheerful. I think that is why I enjoyed her visit so much. I want to always surround myself with women who are successful, positive, and I guess naively cheerful like myself! Laura fits that to a tee! I am watching for more of the Izzy McNeil series to come in the future!

Thank you Laura for an awesome visit!

Bottom Line: Book groups and authors...a natural fit.

Great ideas ladies. I know that locally, our Dianna Love speaks to library groups, etc. Both Dianna Love and Hank Phillippi Ryan offered reader lunches/speaking for the lucky winners on Brenda Novak's annual auction last year. It's good to hear that other authors are open to this kind of thing, too. How fun for readers to get to speak to their favorite authors!

Okay, I'm blushing, but happy to be in such good company as Hank and the Petit Fours & Hot Tamale blog group. I LOVE that so many women are writing together as Casey Daniels and it's working for them. Way to go, girls.

And I'm happy to hearing to see how other authors connect to readers.

Readers are God's gift to writers - thank goodness you all allow us to do what we love.

Great blog, but I have to clear up some confusion . . . Dianna says she loves that so many women write together as Casey Daniels. Not so! All those names are one person--me--and as that one person (under all those names) I've published 45 novels. Don't think I could ever write with even one writing partner, much less all that many!

LOVE speaking to groups. I spoke to hundreds of kids at Dover Air Force Base here in Delaware--I spent the whole day, and they rolled out the red carpet. Most of the kids had never met a "real live author" and were wildly impressed. In the interest of full disclosure, I brought 400 home-made cookies and goodie bags! So was that the secret of my success? Who knows...

Visiting libraries and schools are valuable for authors, and not just because of the honorarium (although that has practical value, of course).

For me, nothing beats the chance to meet and interact with my audience. I love to see my readers--Earthlings and aliens alike--sharing my enthusiasm for my subject matter.

When I go home, I take with me an image of sparkling eyes and beautiful, young, diverse faces. I imagine them looking over my shoulder as I write. The result is that I write for individuals rather than for generic young readers. I can't let those individuals down by doing anything but my best work.

As a writer who frequently goes out and meets people, I have to say, the writers are frequently more excited to meet the readers, than vice versa! Mainly I'm a hermit, and there's simply absolutely nothing nicer than hanging out with readers for an afternoon!

I'm with you, Holly! Though I've noticed I'm much more comfortable in front of a room of 200 than I am one-on-one. What's that old saying about writers being introverts who when they get out in public, have to pretend they're extroverts? So true, so true!

I love meeting other authors. Book signings are fun, but being able to chat one on one is even moreso.
